Deakin University Students Deserve Better! - More food options at Deakin Campuses
The issue
Deakin University students are being left in the dark, with little to no food options available at the Burwood and Waurn Ponds campuses, having significant impact on student life on-campus.
These little to no food options provide no options for students with common dietary needs, including those who are coeliac; "there are NO coeliac safe gluten free options at waurn ponds. it’s an autoimmune disease and not a dietary choice, it’s a medically prescribed diet."
The current Deakin University Food Options are:
Burwood Current Food Options:
- Caffeine - Small Coffee and Take Away food shop (closed from 1st September 2026 until T1 2027), good prices and genuine hospitality!
- 123 Sushi - Asian/Chinese restaurant that moved from the central side to the Elgar Road side at the start of 2026, making it a 15 minute walk for some students. Small portions for a meh price.
- Burwood Pantry - Owned by Deakin. A coffee and food venue thats overpriced and too 'upscale' for most University students.
- The Social - Yet another overpriced coffee shop owned by Deakin, $5.80. for a large coffee is $1.30 more than the Hungry Jacks next to campus!
- Little Bang Espresso - Do we really need 3 coffee shops? Do I really need to say more?
Waurn Ponds Current Food Options:
- Waurn Ponds Pantry - Another pantry, another one owned by Deakin! A coffee and food venue thats overpriced.
- Union Green Kitchen - another one owned by Deakin, upscale Indian and Asian Cuisine.
We, the students, staff and supporters of Deakin University would like Deakin University to:
- invest in student life by bringing in more food options (not run by Deakin) to the Burwood and Waurn Ponds Campuses,
- Require food vendors to cater to all dietaries (Gluten Free, Coeliac safe, Dairy Free, FODMAP, ect) allowing students with dietary needs being able to get food they can eat without leaving campus.
Examples of food vendors are:
- An on-campus Guzman Y Gomez
- On-campus supermarket with Food options (ie salads, wraps ect)
- A subway
Deakin is massively behind in the on campus experience, just look at Monash Clayton with a Roll'd, Guzman Y Gomez, Subway AND Schnitz. For two campuses that have over half of the Deakin Student Cohort, we deserve better!
