DCI Students Against the Removal of Mr. Miller

DCI Students Against the Removal of Mr. Miller
The Issue
Mr. Miller has been a beloved member of the DCI community for the past 8 years. He is the Diploma Program coordinator, signing up students for their IB classes in 10th grade, then their IB exams in 12th. He makes sure students receive all credits necessary, is the co-head of DCI's National Honor Society chapter, the leader of Project Lit (DCI's book club), and on top of all of that, is a warm, supportive, and constant presence in our school as an advocate for all students and their success. His knowledge and expertise on IB has been integral to the success of our school's IB For All mission, and the school would be at a significant loss without him. The IB curriculum is complex, changes often, and is something that Mr. Miller has mastered over his 8 years at DCI. The time and effort he has put into coaching teachers, understanding the IB programme, and supporting students in their IB journey is unmatched by anyone else in this school. Losing him would be detrimental to the success of our school and in reaching its ideals of growth, equity, and excellence.
The Board of DCI and the Executive Director make senior leadership staffing decisions, along with the Chief Talent Officer and Chief of Staff. How they all came to the decision to let go of Mr. Miller is a shortsighted act that no student or teacher at this school understands. There has been no push to get rid of Mr. Miller, no complaints, and instead, an outpouring of support for our wonderful Mr. Miller. Any criticisms that the executive leadership of DCI may have of Mr. Miller and his management of the IB DP programme are taken without consideration for the difficulty of his job, and the success that he has demonstrated. Running an IB For All DP programme at a Public Charter School in Washington, DC in the age of AI; an awful federal administration; DC's economic issues; and with the diversity our school has across socioeconomic, religious, and educational backgrounds makes Mr. Miller's job one of the hardest at DCI. His effort and care has been truly inspiring in past years. While our performance in the IB could be improved, given Mr. Miller’s experience and skills, no replacement could make that change better than him. Replacing him with someone else, when we already truly need his expertise, would take far too much time and would realistically not result in any improvement. Even though he is not a teacher, he is still a brilliant educator.
Our demand is very clear:
Reinstate Mr. Miller as DP Coordinator for next year.
*STUDENT TESTIMONIES*
"Mr. Miller was one of my biggest supporters at DCI when I found out I was leaving for a year !! He was super clear with all my IB options for next year despite the fact that we were on other sides of the world. I would not be as sure about my options without him!" -Rotem Buck, '28
"Mr. Miller is an ideal DP coordinator--he always went above and beyond for all of us, reading our work, making sure that each and everyone of LITERALLY A HUNDRED PLUS KIDS was on track for success. He wrote my rec letter for college and I truly don't think I would be where I am without him. He always remembered my love for music and asked me questions about it when he saw me and he made every student feel seen and heard and ready for the next chapters of their lives. DCI has lost so many amazing staff members and to get rid of one intentionally is genuinely such a loser move." - Sasha Kolb, '25
