Eliminate the final exam for all chemistry courses

Eliminate the final exam for all chemistry courses
The Issue
With the transition to online courses Dawson college has recognized that this would not be an easy transition for everyone. Some courses have even gone as far as to remove the final exam with the logical explanation that it is simply not just to ask their students to write final exams after being taught the whole second half of the semester online. Some students are essential workers, some have family who are ill during this time, some don’t have access to high speed internet or a quiet work place. The chemistry department at Dawson college has now increased the weight of our final exam to 60% of our final grade. Regardless of being aware that R-score is not counting and we are all getting pass/fail grades how come we are being thrown a final exam of 60% knowing that chemistry is not a light course in terms of work. Many students are extremely stressed during this time and even though many might not be able to see it, many students are indeed struggling. We are asking to have the final exam for all chemistry courses removed as it is unjust and wrong to be asking students in the middle of a pandemic to write an exam worth 60% of our grade, this can easily be substituted by online quizzes and online assignments. A final exam and heavily weighted exam is definitely not what students need during these times. As I have stated before, many students are front line workers, dealing with mourning, dealing with income loss or just simply don’t have access to high speed internet or a quiet place to work. This is definitely not a moment in time to be demanding students to prepare for final exams.
