A Better Way

Murder should never be the solution to a problem. But that hasn't stopped the government from going all trigger happy on the helpless badgers. Since the culling began there have been numerous alternatives to culling. Most are more effective and humane than just shooting a badger. Dr. Anne Brummer has recently developed a 3 part testing system that is able to quickly identify and quarantine infected TB cattle. The method takes advantage of modern computing power and is considerably more accurate and faster than the current method used by the government which is decades old. The current skin test method involves removing a piece of skin, injecting a chemical and waiting to see if a reaction occurs is time consuming and ineffective. False positive and infected cattle being cleared are common with the outdated current method. Other methods worth considering are The phage test (Using a modified virus to hunt for the bacteria that causes TB) and the qPCR test (detects TB in cattle dung). The phage test has already found 85 infected cattle that the skin test missed. Meanwhile, the qPCR test can act as a secondary screening process. With better testing and vaccination TB can be contained without having to shoot the badgers. In fact, shooting the badgers makes no differences if infected cattle are missed by the current screening method.
