Keep the AVA building open at the weekends and Improve studio conditions
The Issue
For an art student to develop their practice the studio environment is pivotal in enabling students to grow, experiment and establish themselves as artists as well forge connections with each other. The current studios conditions are inadequate and we are demanding that UEL improve the conditions regarding; lighting, storage, WiFi, basic art materials and welfare facilities. In addition to this we are also demanding that the AVA building is open at the weekends from the morning to the late evening, this is what was offered by University at the open day and the University is no longer providing this yet is still charging the same fee tuition fee of £9250 per year.
Students need the extra two days studio hours as some students have work/care duties that don’t allow them to be in during the week everyday and with them being closed on the weekend it means that students have to go in during the week, therefore the studios are busier which increases the likelihood of an outbreak of COVID-19, it would be more safe to allow students the opportunity to get in at the weekend to prevent future outbreaks of COVID-19.
The facilities and time in the studio is what will lead students to become successful artists who in turn will put UEL on the map as a powerhouse of creativity and innovation, if we don’t get this student morale will continue to be low and people will slowly drift away from their creative endeavours.
