This is a copy of my email correspondence with Sierra Club Very disappointed in the local chapters I have relayed this to the National headquaters, lets see what happens. Please read entire emails. from David Rassel Oct 10 (1 day ago) to dallen@nmu.edu Dear David Allen, I have tried to contact John Rebers but have had no response. below is a copy of the email I sent out on 9-20-16. I also contacted Shelly Campbell. " I am the the admin. coordinator (Shelly Campbell )for the central region of the National Sierra Club and am not able to assist you with this. You may want to contact the Michigan Chapter." So I did send emails to John Rebers and to the Traverse office and have not had any response as I mentioned. I would greatly appreciate any help or guidance and/or assistance with my efforts to stop this insane clear cut method of the DNR. Dear John, I was referred to you by Environmental Law & Policy Center. I have also reached out via email to the office in Traverse and I wanted to reach out to you also as you are in the U.P and should really feel what is happening to OUR forests. My reason for contacting you is I am in need of help to stop a Clear Cut Project right off 141 at Cable Lake rd. and to put an end to clear cutting in Michigan one project at a time. I have a petition with over 30,000 signatures on it currently and growing. Please review the petition and my story and project specifics at this link below as it will be easier than trying to explain it in this short message. https://www.change.org/p/david-rassel-stop-forest-clear-cutting-in-michigan (please cut and paste in browser if link does not work) Thank you very much very your time John and I truly look forward to hearing from you. Kind regards, David J Rassel email davidjrassel@gmail.com Please contact me as soon as possible. From David Allen 5:11 PM (17 hours ago) To David Rassel: Your petition has been discussed by both the UPEC board of directors and by the CUP group of the Michigan Chapter of the SC. We are unwilling to sign on to your petition because clear cutting is an acceptable silvicultural practice in some cases. We are unfamiliar with your particular project near Cable Rd. Clear cutting may or may not be appropriate in this case. I suggest stopping by and chatting with the DNR folks at the Crystal Falls office - they are not evil people. Be well. Dave Allen mailto:davidjrassel@gmail.com> From David Rassel 11:09 AM (0 minutes ago) To David Allen, Where do I start after reading this underwhelming response response of yours. First off please do not use terms you have not fully researched or fully understand as in; "silviculture practice" as I do believe we are discussing forestry but silviculture sounded more professor like. the practice of silviculture is more accurately described as the growing and cultivation of trees as crops to better their productivity as a tree farm whereas; forestry is the science of managing, planting and caring for "Forests", Forests being the key word not farm. I believe you were trying to refer "Silvicultural Systems" whereas; a certain species of tree is being removed and another species planted in replacement as tree crops to be harvested again and again such as a tree farm not a Forest. The problem with that is "We the People" do not employ the DNR to be tree farmers but rather managers of OUR FORESTS! No wildlife lives in tree farms, furthermore it makes no difference when it comes to silviculture as I was already told by the DNR they were not going to replant anything as there are no funds allocated for replanting so it comes down to this; the DNR is just CLEAR CUTTING for profit and blaming it on the Spruce Bud Worm. I see that you speak for the UPEC and the CUP Group of Michigan. Yet you readily admit that all of you are unfamiliar with the project, however you and the Sierra Club, UPEC and CUP Group have all formed an opinion and decided uniformly not endorse/support my petition at any level without even taking the time familiarize yourselves with the project, according to you. Since this opinion was formed without any knowledge of the petition or the project I wanted to see exactly to whom I am conversing with and how valuable your opinion regarding "silvicultural practice" is and why you would be speaking for all these groups, you must be a man of great stature in the environmental and forestry management community and be extremely educated in these matters, correct? According to NUM (http://webb.nmu.edu/Webb/ArchivedHTML/Records/2002-2003ElectronicBulletin/Personnel.htm) I see that you are/were a Associate professor within the business department with an overall rating of 2.2 (out of 5) according to: http://www.ratemyprofessors.com/ShowRatings.jsp?tid=169107 so I am a bit confused as to how you have become to mouth piece for all of these groups which are supposedly concerned with the protection of OUR FORESTS, WILDLIFE and ENVIRONMENT. Lastly this not just about the forest on Cable Lake Rd, this is about the CLEAR CUTTING as a practice in whole (Clearcutting is the most common and economically profitable method of logging). CLEAR CUTTING has no place in Forestry unless you are a logger. Nothing wrong with logging it just needs to be done the right way. CLEAR CUTTING is unimaginative, counterproductive and lacks intelligence, much as the feckless opinion you have expressed to me. I will be posting this email on the petition you have refused to endorse to show that Sierra Club along with the UPEC and CUP Group according to you have all formed opinions without even taking the time to become familiar with what the petition or the issue of concern. This is a sad day for OUR FORESTS a sad day indeed. Be well David J Rassel email davidjrassel@gmail.com "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. ...
