Danielle Marinkovic started this petition to State Senator David Carlucci and

The Opioid Crisis has developed beyond a Crises. It's become just another day growing up in New York State. Monthly, Me and other residents will open up the Newsfeed to our Social Media accounts, and see another friend has passed away due to Opioid addiction. I have lost more friends over the years than I can count on my two hands. The death's have become such a social norm, that I often can't tell a story about a childhood friend without including that they have passed away now.

Me, my friends and the Residents of New York are tired of it. How many more friends and loved one's do we have to lose? How many more parents have to bury their own children? How many more babies will grow without parents? When will this CRISES, be finally taken seriously?

Making Narcan more easily accessible was only a small part of the Solution. Narcan will in fact stop an overdose right in its tracks. However, it will not prevent the next overdose from happening. Unfortunately, if the victim is lucky enough to survive the first time, there will be another, and possibly another. Before, they are even SLIGHTLY taken seriously. Why do we have a system that sets up addicts for failure? Why do we allow addicts to get worse, before the system steps in to help?  If addiction is a mental illness, than it needs to be treated like one. NYS currently only mandates overdose victims of opioid addiction to 72 hours of inpatient care. In NYS, if a person attempts suicide they are mandated to two week in patient treatment due to fear of relapsing. Why is it, that if I overdose on tylenol willingly. And, a addict overdoses willingly on Narcotics, they are considered different? They both have a 50% survival rate, they both involve the victim knowing the dangers of their actions. They both need help immediately.  The only difference is that ONE IS TAKEN SERIOUSLY, THE OTHER IS NOT.

Catching a disease in the beginning is crucial to successful treatment, allowing addicts to repeatability overdose is an accessory to suicide. I propose, We mandate 2 week inpatient treatment for a Narcotic Overdose. The waiting game does not work, we have plenty of proof in the community showing that things will get worse if they are not handled right away. This crises, needs to finally be treated like the danger it truly is. My generation, has taken a huge hit. And, I refuse to see the next one suffer the same path as mine. Addiction is a mental illness, treat it like one.

Thank you
