This Weekend Let’s Persuade The Labour Party
May 21, 2016 — 34,000 have now signed! Your extraordinary petition is waking up politicians to vaper power. They will respect our growing numbers as we get more confident and more organised in precisely targeting those who make decisions. (Don’t forget that 99% of your vaping friends have still to sign).
To win the House of Lords vote that will literally block the TPD it is absolutely crucial that Lord Callanan’s motion gets the backing of the Labour Party.
In theory Labour should be keen to support us. Two years ago Jeremy Corbyn described the TPD’s regulations on e-cigarettes as being “perverse”. Last week his shadow health minister said in Parliament that vaping should not have been included in the TPD.
So how can you respectfully request Labour to be consistent with its statements and back #LordsVapeVote?
Do just one thing now:
Tweet Labour’s Health Team: they are Shadow Health Secretary, Heidi Alexander MP and Shadow Health Ministers, Luciana Berger MP, Andrew Gwynne MP, Barbara Keeley MP and Lord Philip Hunt who supported vaping in the Lords
@heidi_mp @lucianaberger @GwynneMP @KeeleyMP @justinmadders @lordphilofbrum
Ask them whether they will be backing vapers in the #LordsVapeVote? Or not? Labour wants Britain to stay friends with Europe - but they need to show that they are willing to stand up and make Europe work for us.
Doing nothing, saying nothing is not going to win the votes of 2.8 million vapers. The 2% nicotine limit affects 252,000 people. What is Labour's answer for these vapers? (If 140 characters is not enough email Heidi on email@example.com )
What Will Happen Next
After encouraging Labour, we will put our message to the Conservatives. There are lots of tactics ahead. (We haven’t forgotten there’s a referendum!). But the central focus is on getting vaping heard in Parliament. Whenever politicians debate vaping we win. So we are aiming for a debate in the Commons as well as the Lords. We have also asked for a Health Select Committee investigation into e-cigarettes.
We are growing. We are getting smarter. We will never give up. So we will succeed.
Finally: three cheers for Conservative MPs @MarkPawsey and @StAlbansMP who have both asked the Prime Minister questions about vaping. And to Labour’s @KevinBarronMP and @GloriaDePiero who are also supportive MPs.
Keep fighting for people power!
