Increase the funding for treatment and research of mental health issues in the UK

There are far too many suicides of young people in our community. My own daughter Kesia Leatherbarrow took her own life aged 17 in December 2013, after being completely let down by the mental health services despite her desperate need for help. Since then there have been an alarming number of young people taking their own lives due to inadequate mental health provision in the UK. In 2014 Deborah's beautiful son Tyler Smith died after falling from a viaduct aged 19, whilst suffering a mental health crisis. Despite asking for help on many occasions and being deemed high risk, Tyler was discharged from hospital due to disgracefully inadequate mental health provision. In 2013, 6233 suicides took place in the UK a 4% increase from the previous year. 90% of people who attempt or die by suicide have a mental health condition. Suicide is the leading cause of death for both men and women in England and Wales aged between 20 and 34.The figures do not take in to account those deaths ruled by coroners as accidental purely because no suicide note was found. The number of our children taking their own lives is increasing and the prevalence of self-harm is also far more common. We must take action now before more of our loved ones are lost due to inadequate funding of mental health services in the UK.
