UK, give anonymity to those accused of sexual offences until proven guilty or innocent.
The Issue
Too many people are having their lives ruined by false allegations and they deserve to be protected from identification as much as victims.
A former TV presenter has called for anonymity for those accused of sexual offences until they are charged or convicted.
Speaking on Good Morning Britain on Tuesday, he said: "I think the best way forward is to have a little change that would mean a lot, and you have the right to remain anonymous, the same kind of law for when the accuser goes to the police.
"The accuser has to be believed, the accuser has to have anonymity and I think the same basic rights should be afforded to the accused.
"It's gone too far the other way now and there's too many guys, their lives being destroyed on the back of false allegations, and I think a little change would make a big difference now."
1. Women must come forward and report a sexual offence
2. The justice system will deliver the correct verdict.
3. We must not judge the accused until we know the outcome.
Justice is on the side of truth, facts and evidence.
The accusor in a case of rape or one of the sexual offences listed in the 1992 Act is entitled to 'anonymity' in the press. Once an allegation of one of the relevant offences has been made, nothing can be published which is likely to lead members of the public to identify the victim.
The accused does not currently have anonynimity and faces the media speculation and full force of public stigma which ruined their lives.
In the cases of false-accusation the accusor uses the legal system to abuse and victimize and potentially jail the innocent defender.
False-accusors destroy faith in the legal system for any women who have suffered rape, and ruin the lives of innocent upstanding men in societ, using the legal system to punish the innocent regardless of the court outcome.
Innocent men, must be allowed the same right to protection of identity from start to finish.
There are 100+ reasons for false allegations, but here are a handful that have come up in real news stories:
1. "attempt to make her family feel guilty following an argument"
2. "jilted woman framed ex-lover for rape after he refused to rekindle their affair"
3. "Scorned woman plotted revenge for one night of passion with boss"
4. "trying to extort $1500 out of a 43-year-old man"
5. "falsely claimed she had been raped so she could resit her A-levels"
Each of these accusations was heard in court, and was found false. Each one of these accusors had the right to be heard in court and have the facts and truth come out in court, but they should never have the right to use the legal system, media scrutiny, and public stigma to abuse and victimize innocent men.
Therefore we must petition for the same choice of anonymity to be given to the accused as the accusor of sexual offences, until either found guilty or innocent.
