Make a difference for people with special needs and disabilities

The Issue

Walk in our shoes for a day or two, sit in our chair,
You'll understand how we feel.
You'll understand how it feels to be called all the names under the sun like "freak", "retard",
You'll understand how it feels to be stared at, not for an argument, not for something we've done, just for being the way we are.
You'll understand how hard it is to live in a world where you're judged so much and belittled.
You tell others that everyone's different,
Yet judge us when you see our differences show, you look at us weirdly and stare.
We can't help our strange habits or obsessions,
We run around and may get excited.
Some of us can't control out behaviour,
Yet some of us can 'try' to impress the people around us.
Sometimes it doesn't work,
We struggle in lessons and it takes time to understand things,
Some of us understand more than others.
We get so anxious easily and our hyperactivity and behaviour is unpredictable.
We have a limited amount of interests and only will talk about them,
If we talk about anything else with you then that's a surprise.
Some of us sign,
Some of us use sounds,
Some of us can't stop talking and some of us are none verbal.
What we are trying to say, that we are all human,
Everyones different you say, well why don't you treat us how you treat others without a disability?
Give us a smile at least, give us something to remember, a smile or something nice to say,
Not the usual stare or evils.
Try to understand or try to accept that everyone's different. Everyone has a different story. Everyone have bones in body and blood flowing through their bodies, everyone has a smile and a something to share. If we smile to you, smile back, it will make us feel loved.

I have a nineteen year old Autistic brother and I am on the Autistic Spectrum too with Aspergers Syndrome, I also have ADHD and Galactosaemia (dairy free but affects a lot including my learning difficulties) I have been on a rollercoaster rush through life and still on one now. SO MUCH HAS HAPPENED.

I find it hard in public sometimes, I can't cope in busy, crowded places and I have sensory issues. I love looking after children and also love being able to remember things!

There are pros and cons to everything in life, the reason I have made this is, that one of the things I am maybe overly passionate about is equality and being aware and kind to human beings. Throughout life, me and my brother have been bullied and made fun of. I wan't people to be more aware or kind to each other. I love writing and making things, therefore I created a poem to get my frustration out of when people have made fun and looked strangely at me, and others I look after.
