The Issue

The use of David Bowie's song Five Years in an advertisement for Meta is inappropriate and offensive. His song was never meant to sell products. Especially ones being used to destroy and observe people, such as Meta Glasses. This song is an expression about the vulnerabilities of the human race. A warning of what could happen if we don't care for our planet and each other. Something that the AI that Meta is using is actively destroying. I beg of you to pay attention to the lyrics he chose and what they mean.

Respect the legacy of an artist who cared for humanity and the impact we have on the world. Imagine how David Bowie would have felt knowing that his warning against global neglect is being used to promote this kind of product. This commercialization is a slap in the face to not only Bowie's legacy, but to every person who finds a reflection of themselves in his work. It’s haunting to advertise “the future is for everyone,” while promoting something actively destroying the environment… with a song about an apocalypse in the background. They are laughing at us.

When you think of David Bowie… what do you think of? His art? His music? His community? His self expression? His originality? How he impacted the world? All of these things are the antithesis to the use of generative artificial intelligence and observation techniques used in Meta Glasses and other Meta products. We are simply looking for Meta to change their song choice, or to remove the advertisement entirely.

Meta has a responsibility to advertise ethically. Their use of this song shows their lack of media literacy or care for their audience. They need to understand the cultural significance of the music they use. Five Years is not just some background noise... It's an urgent beg for change… A change that Meta Glasses actively contradict. A change that we can easily make if we actually tried.

You can help make that change. I urge you to not only sign this petition and share it with others… but for you to understand the meaning of this song and understand how the use of music affects us all.
