GMO agriculture is a situation for disaster. It is also standing in the way of the shift to sustainable agriculture already taking place in local communities all over the world that can truly enable people to feed themselves in times of climate change.  Scientists at the International Center for Tropical Agriculture have released a study that points to the proof of GMO crops dominating the global food system in terms of production advantage, are threatening the security of our ability to use viable crops to feed the human population.In an open letter “from world scientists to all governments concerning genetically modified organisms” it was expressed that “GM crops offer no benefits to farmers or consumers. Instead, many problems have been identified, including yield drag, increased herbicide use, erratic performance, and poor economic returns to farmers. GMO crops also intensify corporate monopoly on food, which is driving family farmers to destitution, and preventing the essential shift to sustainable agriculture that can guarantee food security and health around the world.”

This is a dangerous situation for the future of food and farming, one that needs to be reversed as quickly as possible, particularly as GMO agriculture is failing on all counts. That can only be achieved by a ban on GMOs, an action already taken by countries and local communities around the world. I am asking that there be a ban of GMOs in the United States of America at this crucial time.

 Cross pollination can occur at quite large distances. New genes may also be included in the offspring of the traditional, organic crops miles away. This makes it difficult to distinguish which crop field is organic, and which is not, posing a problem to the proper labeling of non-GMO food products. 

The number of Americans suffering from many diseases almost doubled, infant mortality rate has increased, and life expectancy has decreased. Jeffrey Smith, filmmaker and author of Genetic Roulette: The Documented Health Risks of Genetically Engineered Foods, asserts that all of these changes in the health of America are due to the change in our food supply. Genetic engineering and GMOs have been the most drastic and major change to the U.S. food supply within this time period.

I am asking that ALL GMOs crops be banned in the United States of America, to ensure that we can live in a more sustainable, healthy future, so that we can live the way nature intended us to live, without the threat of people's lives being effected with illnesses, such as cancer, and destroying our health, the environment, and our future from GMOs production.
