The Issue

We are calling on the Dartmouth Student Government to pressure the Dartmouth Administration to reject Trump's compact through (1) publicly releasing a statement condemning the compact as an unprecedented attack on higher education (2) pressure the Beilock administration in all private meetings to reject the compact, (3) ensure transparency on this issue by keeping weekly Dartmouth Student Government meetings open to the public, and most importantly, (4) launch a referendum asking whether students oppose Dartmouth signing onto the compact to ensure all student voices are heard. This referendum must be called as soon as possible in order to guarantee administrative accountability to the student body.

Thus far, DSG has taken none of the aforementioned actions. Instead, DSG has called for a closed meeting in their only session discussing the topic, shutting down any public access or accountability. This is unacceptable. DSG are the elected representatives of the student body and must take heed of student sentiment. For this reason we are reiterating our call for an immediate referendum on signing Trump's compact open to the entire student body.

These demands are made all the more urgent by the unacceptable and unprecedented contents of the Trump Administration's Compact. Firstly, the compact sets out to immediately criminalize any level of dissent on campus. It demands "signatories commit to using lawful force" to respond to student protests - a direct attack on free speech on campus. Secondly, it explicitly calls for the institutionalization of transphobia and the erasure of trans and other queer students. Precisely, the compact demands "Institutions commit to defining and otherwise interpreting 'male,' 'female,' 'woman,' and 'man' according to reproductive function and biological processes." Thirdly, the compact destroys any semblance of academic independence and integrity. It calls for "transforming or abolishing institutional units that purposefully punish, belittle, and even spark violence against conservative ideas" up to and including Dartmouth Academic Departments. Under the vagueness of this logic, the Trump administration could demand the dismantling of all departments from WGSS to EARS (for instruction regarding climate change/evolution). Finally, the compact mounts a direct attack on international students at Dartmouth. Both by screening out and preventing the acceptance of any students who critique Israel's ongoing genocide or any other action by the US and its allies, and by enforcing a hard cap on the number of international students able to be accepted into Dartmouth. The compact argues the presence of international students is "saturating the campus with noxious values such as anti-Semitism and other anti-American values, creating serious national security risks".

Given the unprecedented nature of Trump's attack on our academic freedom and the lives of marginalized students, it is imperative we take immediate action to oppose Trump's loyalty oath. Negotiating with fascists should not be an acceptable response - we urge Dartmouth Student Government and the current Dartmouth administration to condemn and reject Trump's compact in the strongest possible terms and as soon as possible.
