The RCMP have now called off the active search Darius, who vanished without a trace near Tent mountain / Island Lake campground minutes away from the Crowsnest Highway and BC/Alberta border. Their officers, alongside search and rescue teams, volunteers, dogs, drones, and helicopters, worked tirelessly in difficult terrain, giving everything they could. We owe them gratitude for their commitment and compassion during such a heartbreaking time.
But this moment also highlights the gap in our system that must be addressed. The RCMP were bound by a rigid Amber Alert criteria that prevented them from issuing an alert when Darius first disappeared. It wasn’t a lack of will, it was a lack of discretion within the law. Without an eyewitness to an abduction, their hands were tied. Imagine if they had the authority to act sooner: phones buzzing province-wide, communities instantly aware, thousands more eyes and ears helping in those crucial early hours.
This is not just about one boy or one family. It is about every Canadian family. Any parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, or caregiver could find themselves in this exact nightmare: a child vanishes, and the system waits while precious minutes slip away.
That is why we need Darius’s Law. Reform that will give police the discretion to act in high-risk cases, when every moment counts. Reform that will strengthen public confidence, empower first responders, and most importantly, save lives.
