The Issue
My son, Darion Davis, was only 16 years old when his life was taken after a violent assault. No parent should ever have to experience this kind of loss, and no family should feel like the justice system does not fully recognize the seriousness of these crimes.
In Georgia, some violent crimes committed by juveniles are automatically prosecuted in adult court. However, aggravated assault resulting in death or catastrophic injury is not currently included among those offenses. Because of this, cases involving devastating violence can remain entirely in juvenile court unless a prosecutor chooses to seek a transfer.
Darion’s Law would require a mandatory review for adult prosecution when a juvenile commits aggravated assault that results in death, permanent brain injury, or catastrophic bodily harm. This law would not eliminate the juvenile justice system, but it would ensure that the most severe cases receive proper consideration in adult court.
Darion’s Law is about accountability, transparency, and protecting other families from experiencing the same heartbreak.
We are calling on Georgia lawmakers to review and strengthen our laws so that extreme acts of violence involving juveniles are handled with the seriousness they deserve.
Please stand with us and support Darion’s Law.
