The current indisputable evidence showcasing the many benefits of cannabis makes one question why its uses have been suppressed for so long. 

Cannabis has never directly killed a single person in recorded history, ever. It is essentially impossible to overdose by cannabis. Along with all its possible benefits, why is this natural, god-given plant still prosecuted as a harmful substance? 

Let me paint you a comparative picture. Tobacco, a legal over the counter drug, kills over 8 million individuals, every year. Husbands, wives, grandfathers and grandmothers, children and grandchildren too. All gone, forever, due to an incredibly harmful, yet somehow legal, drug. And considering the lucrative multi billion industry was once promoted as being good for you in the early 1900’s, history has repeatedly shown that what is written as law, might not necessarily be the right thing to do.

Cannabis has been amongst us since the beginning of time. It’s been used as a medicine and a way to achieving euphoria since ancient times, with one of the first references to its use dating back to 2700B.C., in a Chinese medical manual. It was widely used as both medicine and recreation, and its use spread rapidly up until it began to meet legal restrictions in the early 1900’s. 

Prior to this it was used not only as medicine and to achieve a euphoric feeling, but also as hemp. The fibers of hemp have a large variety of purposes including clothes, bags and rope, and even the seeds, they are one of the best known sources of plant-based protein and GLA. 

Let me ask you, with all due respect, can you give me a single logical reason for keeping cannabis illegal? Zero deaths, euphoric feelings that can help anxiety and arguably depression, and a long list of beneficial medicinal applications. Even if it were slightly harmful to one's body, it would be nowhere near the damage alcohol and tobacco can cause.

Our laws surrounding cannabis are ridiculously outdated, treating cannabis users as hardened criminals when that’s the last thing they are (granted, mostly. There’s always one.). ACT has seen their mistake, recently reversing their cannabis laws to allow possession of up to 50grams of dried cannabis, as well as addressing other key issues such as allowing up to four cannabis plants per household*. 

Judging by America’s recent success with legalising both medicinal and recreational cannabis in most states, it’s an insanely lucrative business. Which shouldn’t come as a surprise considering cannabis is quite possibly the most widely used ‘drug’ across the globe. 

What better time to tap into the cannabis industry than during a pandemic such as our current situation with Covid19? It would create jobs, bring in tax and sales revenue, and after everyone’s been cooped up indoors for months on end, what better way to relax than lighting up a joint?

It’s time to take a step in the right direction and ‘renew’ our cannabis legislations.
