CHANGE ICU VISITING RULES

Our boy Benjamin Stylo is currently in a Melbourne Intensive Care Unit fighting for his life as a result of a rare autoimmune disease. Heartbreakingly, Ben is critically ill and we are asking for your help to have Victoria’s Chief Medical Officer, Brett Sutton, change the rules so that we - and many families like us - may visit our loved one. Currently none of us - his parents, siblings, family or partner - are allowed to see Ben in ICU, except for special circumstances. And in the current Covid climate, special circumstances are only when it's time to go. We fully understand that Covid restrictions are in place to prevent further spread within the ICU ward, which is the last thing we want. But we also believe there needs to be a balanced approach to granting access to patients, especially when there may be limited windows of opportunity to see them.

The last week has again shown us the fragility of life. Six days ago, Ben was taken off life support. He was conscious by the next day and even said "Hello Dad" over the phone. A video link was arranged for later the same day but within hours, Ben deteriorated and was back on life support, Ben's organs were failing. We had missed our opportunity. We did not know if we would see Ben conscious again. Ben was taken off life support again yesterday, twice in less than 5 days. Miraculously Ben is now awake, conscious and able to eat, however, there are no guarantees. We have rallied as hard as we can for the hospital to allow us to be with Ben while there is this window of opportunity. Sadly, the answer so far has been no. We do not want our son to feel abandoned and alone, especially in hours of need. Our hearts are breaking and we have asked ourselves where is the compassion in this decision?

Unfortunately, Covid is here and it will be for the near future. The current ICU visitation system needs to change to allow families to be able to see their loved ones alive, not for a couple of hours at the end. Therefore, we ask Mr Sutton to change the guidelines around visiting ICU patients so that we can see Ben - and others can see their loved ones - when he is alive and conscious not when he is unconscious and near the end. Please sign and share this petition in the hope that we can change the system, change the rules, create a safe place for a family to visit their loved ones without placing others at Risk, there has to be some way! We do not want any parent to go through what we are going through. HELP US SEE OUR BEN ALIVE!!!!! And help other families to not go through what we are going through!!!
