Vital criminal law proceedings such as trials and committals have come to a halt while the community deals with COVID 19. The impact to our justice system is devastating. There is a way to overcome this crisis and allow hearings to resume, drawing on innovative and modern technology such as video and remote conferencing facilities - that is, hearings can continue to run without needing to be in an actual courtroom. The issue is, the Magistrates' and County Courts in Victoria need a significant funding boost to update these facilities. To allow our justice system to continue operating and protect the fundamental rights of our community, the public, legal profession, judiciary and other relevant stakeholders, urge the Victorian Government to fund such equipment promptly. We can make this work remotely - we just need the right equipment!
