Dangar Island Dogs

The issue

Our family, like many others residing on Dangar Island, enjoys the companionship of a beloved dog who unfortunately does not fit in a standard carry-on animal travel crate. This leaves us limited options for ferry transport, forcing us to hire costly water taxis or find fellow residents with boats willing to assist us in getting our furry friend off the island.

The current policy requiring dogs to be crated while on the ferry imposes significant challenges for those of us without personal transport options. It creates an undue burden not only financially but also logistically when simply trying to access essential services and social opportunities beyond the island.

The use of muzzles on The Dangar Island Ferry is a proven method of passenger/pet protection having been used for many years without incident. The use of a muzzle is both cost effective and space saving. Keeping both passengers/owners and pets happy and safe without taking up valuable floor/seating with multiple cumbersome cages on board. Not to mention the added cost differential of a $30 one-way trip by water taxi as opposed to a $7.50 (full fare)/or $2.50 (concession) ferry fare.

Moreover, for larger dogs and their owners, the availability of muzzles instead of cages would greatly enhance accessibility, making it feasible to utilize the ferry rather than seeking alternative, costly means of transport.

Allowing muzzles instead of crates aligns with guidelines in many urban areas where pets and public transport coexist harmoniously without compromising safety. We request the Dangar Island ferry service and Transport NSW reconsider this policy in order to accommodate dog owners adequately.

Dogs are an integral part of our community, and their transportation safety and comfort should be balanced with realistic logistics. Using a muzzle rather than a cage assures both the safety of the passengers and the dogs, ensuring they are secure without restricting access to reliable ferry services.

Sign this petition to help the many dog-owning families on Dangar Island who depend on the ferry service to facilitate better travel options without incurring unnecessary expenses or difficulties. Let's make Dangar Island more inclusive and convenient for all our residents, two-legged and four-legged alike.
