Thank you so much to the over 51,000 people that took time to stop the tarnishing of MLK Jr. Public Library with Bezos's name with your support of this petition.
Yesterday morning, I received confirmation from the DC Council that the auditorium will not be named after Bezos. Upon hearing this, I ceded my testimony time, so the hearing may focus on the other issues presented, but confirmed that the petition content and number of supporters will be included in the record.
It is my hope that this petition and all of its support will serve as an indicator of our expectations and an example for other institutions as they consider name dedications going forward.
The Library has yet to announce anything further on the possible dedication to Toni Morrison. However, at the hearing, the Director did speak to reworking donation and dedication policies.
I considered leaving the petition open until we received an official dedication, but at this point, I do believe the Library will make a responsible choice. Otherwise, they'll have 51,000 petitioners and 19,000 letter writers to face.
Thanks again and keep up the good work.
