Say No to adding bike lines along St. David Street

Say No to adding bike lines along St. David Street

The Issue

In March 2021, our Council reached out to the local Community to gather feedback on 4 different options for the re-construction of St. David Street, Fergus. Of the 4 options, 41.6% of respondents said that they would ‘Match and replace existing vehicle travel lanes, on-street parking lanes, boulevards, and sidewalks.’ 27.6% of respondents said they would ‘Maintain on-street parking from St. Andrew Street to St. Patrick Street’, and only 15.6% of respondents said that they would ‘Add separated cycling lanes on both sides of St. David Street from St. Andrew Street to Hill Street East, and unseparated bike lanes north of Hill Street East’.

There was a fourth option to ‘remove parking lanes and increase boulevard width and 10.8% of respondents were in favour of this option.

Overall, 69% of respondents were in favour of maintaining parking along this stretch of St. David Street, while 26% were in favour of reducing parking and/or adding a Bike Lane option.

Another question on the Survey asked, ‘What aspects of the project are most important to you?’ The largest or most popular response to this question was to ‘maximize on street parking’ and the lowest or least popular response was to ‘Add dedicated bike lanes’. In fact, almost 4 times as many people preferred to maximize on street parking over adding dedicated bike lanes.

So, what did our Council decide to do with this public feedback? They chose to vote for ‘adding dedicated bike lanes’. UNANIMOUSLY! How does this make sense!

Please sign this petition to ask our local Council members to reconsider their decision and listen to the feedback and preferences of the people that live and work in this Community. Thanks for your review and your vote for change.
