Again like many things, this should be simple but the they can make it practically impossible. The correct answer should be that there are many places where it should be legal to put up posters, as long as you follow any relevant laws and regulations. Some common places include:
- Bus stops and train stations
- Shop windows and building walls (with permission)
- Community noticeboards
- Lamp posts
- Billboards
Can you put posters in public?
In general, yes you should be able to put posters in public UK spaces. With a few obvious caveats to keep in mind, such as getting permission first, if you want to put up posters on someone else’s property, and making sure your posters are not defamatory or obscene.
Can you actually do it in practice in London?
It seems the answer to is it's almost certainly not allowed *if* they are out to get you *, you see there is this mouldy old law from the 1839 which basically can can bo used to prevent just about anything like this, if it is actually enforced, in my case they would absolutely enforce this crazy old law. In reality, I'm sure anyone else maybe UK could do pretty much do whatever they want in this regard, within reason, without any serious consequences,
I mean, this sort of stuff is almost unenforceable in practice, in so much as unless it is actually causing a proper disturbance or nuisance to somebody it literally wouldn't be worth anyone's time to even report, mutch less prosecute.
I'm reasonably sure that any supporters of this, or any other, petition could quite happily use these flyers and QR codes as intented, but I know that if I try to use them, the SNT will prosecute me for actually committing a real offense this time, even one from a 1839 statute made obsolete my more recent Acts.
* Technically - if any "damage" is caused (e.g. if it incurs any cost to remove, like if sticky stuff is left behind on the lamppost) then that's criminal damage; even if no damage is caused then it's an offence contrary to s. 54 Metropolitan Police Act 1839; I've never heard of any enforcement even in the event of no damage being caused... But again, if that is any technical possibility, I just know they would use it against me.
