By becoming an Engineers Without Borders (EWB) Sponsor University, Curtin would be able to offer the opportunity to engineering students to study a humanitarian thesis in their final year of study. EWB’s University Research Program is the only humanitarian engineering research program of its kind in Australia, providing students with a strong grounding in humanitarian engineering and community led design.
 
EWB provides impact-oriented research briefs that focus on the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals. Students who choose to undertake their thesis with EWB are highly supported in this program through the availability of online modules on sustainable development, professional mentors and more. By choosing to do a humanitarian thesis, students are able to apply engineering theory in order to make a tangible impact on the world, something that past students report to be extremely motivating.

Research topics currently available are energy (including renewable energy), agriculture, assistive technology, business development, professional practice, shelter and water, and sanitation and hygiene. These span across all disciplines from mechanical, civil, mechatronic, chemical and electrical.
