Crossing Safety: St. James, New York
Crossing Safety: St. James, New York
The Issue
As spring approaches and the weather gets warmer, many students from Smithtown High School East and the neighboring Nesaquake Middle School begin to walk from school along the side of North Country Road to access local St. James businesses, such as Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts.
The lack of sidewalks, crosswalks and stop lights, in addition to heavy traffic moving at high speeds creates a dangerous environment. In addition, the parking lots by these businesses often become chaotic during peak hours, with cars entering and exiting quickly while students are forced to navigate vehicles from all directions. These conditions create a risky environment for both drivers and pedestrians, highlighting the need for improved safety measures.
Some potential safety measures include:
- Crosswalks
- Sidewalks
- Pedestrian Light System
- Speed Tracking Signs
With your support in signing this petition, we can start implementing a safer system to provide a lower risk way for students and all pedestrians to cross the street and stay safe! Together, we can make the community a safer place for everyone.
