Thanks to public pressure and a real need for change, the NC Department of Transportation (NCDOT) applied for and then received $25 million in federal grant money to construct wildlife crossings in Eastern North Carolina to specifically help the critically endangered red wolf!!. This is in addition to $4 million in private matching funds that were raised in a campaign begun by Wildlands Network and supported by Center for Biological Diversity and an anonymous donor that pledged $2 million.

Vehicle strike is currently the number one cause of death for the red wolf, and this is just the news we needed to strengthen their conservation and help generations of red wolves in the future.

Thanks to each and every person that signed and shared this petition, further highlighting the public's desire to see red wolves survive. If you'd like to continue keeping up with red wolf news and conservation, you can subscribe to Wildlands Network's newsletter here or make a donation here .

Here's a fantastic article about the recent NCDOT grant: https://coastalreview.org/2024/12/future-u-s-64-wildlife-crossings-aim-to-spare-red-wolves/

This one project will hopefully be the first of 3-4 needed to fully mitigate the wildlife carnage that happens on US 64. Wildlands Network is conducting a daily roadkill survey from Columbia to Manns Harbor, and from August to December they counted over 2400 dead vertebrates, including over 700 turtles, over 700 snakes, and over 600 amphibians. Building underpasses and fencing will help save all of these animals from being killed on the highway.

Once again, a massive thank you to all! Stay tuned for next steps!
