For Shark Awareness Day on Friday, July 14th, we invite you to participate in a special call to action to strengthen our message and demand the change that is long overdue.
Join us in sending a text message to ABC National Radio at 0418 226 576, where you can voice your strong opposition to the use of shark nets, and ask them to run an exposé on them. In your message, make sure to include the hashtags #netsoutnow and #sharkawarenessday to demonstrate our unified stance on this critical matter. For this action to be impactful, we need as many people as possible to take part.
Our campaign aims to bring an end to the use of shark nets in New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland (QLD). However, despite tireless campaigning and countless pleas by passionate individuals, including a small number of dedicated politicians, a resolution has remained frustratingly elusive. This is because the State governments of QLD and NSW, remain steadfast in their unwillingness to modernise shark mitigation, and that stance remains unchallenged by the Federal Minister for the Environment.
In light of this, we are now focusing our efforts on getting the media's attention to this issue. If the politicians wish to hide in their ivory towers, we will get their attention via the media!
Currently, Queensland persists in retaining its shark nets during the whale migration season, despite the grave danger they pose to humpback whales. Shockingly, four of these magnificent creatures have already fallen victim to entanglement this season alone. On the other hand, New South Wales has taken the initiative to remove the shark nets from the water to prevent further harm to humpback whales BUT disconcertingly, NSW is now gearing up for the upcoming meshing season, scheduled to start on September 1st, and are even looking to renew their shark net contracts for years to come! It is imperative that we put an end to these irresponsible practices and prevent such situations from continuing any longer.
