It's bad enough that shark nets are ineffective at protecting people and only harm animals, but what's even worse is a shark net is still being used at Garie Beach, although the beach has been closed for 12 months.

It makes no sense, but then again, nothing about the NSW Shark Meshing Program makes sense. You can help by contacting the NSW Threatened Species Scientific Committee about the changes you want to see to shark netting.

So, whether you are a scientist, a conservationist, an environmentalist or a concerned community member, we urge you to write to the NSW Threatened Species Scientific Committee and even the NSW Fisheries Scientific Committee to highlight your concerns and provide your suggestions regarding changes to the NSW Shark Meshing Program.

A few days ago, we received some very concerning news that, following the recent five-year review of the Joint Management Agreement (JMA) for the NSW Meshing Program, the JMA was rolled over without amendment and public consultation.

This is despite Minister for the Environment James Griffin's Office assurances that the agreement would be updated to address flaws and this process would include public consultation.

It's concerning because the JMA is flawed and has not been meeting its objectives over the last five years... why would you roll over an agreement that isn't meeting objectives? We think something 'fishy' is going on.

That's why it's so crucial for you to contact the NSW Threatened Species Scientific Committee to highlight your concerns and provide your suggestions about the changes you want to see to shark nets.

Despite facing obstacles, we remain focused and determined to achieve our goals with your support.
