There were two more whales entangled in shark nets in the last week.
That's twelve this year and double last year's tally, and the season is not over yet. Rescuers did a great job in freeing the whale, but that doesn't get away from the fact that we don't know if the whale will survive and that shark nets have no place in the 21st century.
We are thankful that more and more people approach us offering support and assistance. Since 1 September, the beginning of the meshing season in NSW, we've noticed an escalation in the type of support people are willing to offer. And that means that individuals and organisations are investing greater time and resources to support the Nets Out Now campaign. This extra effort also means that the momentum for our Summer events continues to expand.
People are also starting to understand that the Federal Environment Minister, Tanya Plibersek, has the power to close the loophole in Australian legislation, the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 that allows the shark culling programs to exist in NSW and QLD. Tanya, and prior to that her predecessor, is listed as a decision maker on this petition - but we are yet to hear a response.
Keep up the passion.
Keep up the agitation.
Keep escalating.
Stay relentless, and stay tuned.
