Criminalize selling laptops with non-upgradable 8GB RAM
The Issue
My frustration started with endless loading screens and error messages while trying to run Minecraft on my 8GB RAM laptop. I felt ripped off. How could a modern, new device struggle with such a basic game? With how fast tech is advancing, both gaming and work tasks need faster, more capable machines. Still, many manufacturers keep selling laptops with only 8GB of non-upgradable RAM.
This limitation makes it hard to do even everyday tasks—let alone run demanding apps—forcing people to replace their laptops sooner than they should. Reports show that popular tools, from educational platforms to creative apps like Adobe Suite, and yes, even games like Minecraft, now need more memory than 8GB can handle.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), e-waste is the fastest-growing type of solid waste, with millions of tons thrown out each year. Laptops that can't be upgraded add to this problem, as people are forced to toss them not because they’re broken, but because they’re outdated.
We should be promoting devices that can be repaired and upgraded. Laws need to push manufacturers to sell laptops that let users upgrade their RAM. This would help people save money and cut down on the growing problem of e-waste.
This issue matters, and the time to act is now. As concerns about sustainability and tech waste grow, we can tackle both by banning the sale of laptops with non-upgradable 8GB RAM. It’s about giving consumers better options and protecting the environment.
Let’s call on lawmakers and regulators to step in. Demand laws that require laptops to allow RAM upgrades, so people can keep their devices longer and reduce waste. Sign the petition and help push for a smarter, more sustainable future.
