The Issue

Having been a victim of trolling numerous times, the harassment I've faced online escalated to the point where my address and personal details were exposed to the public. This invasion severely impacted my mental health, bringing me to the brink of considering ending my life. The distress didn't stop with me; it affected my children as well, and despite our pleas, we couldn't even relocate with the help of the council. Authorities passed the responsibility back and forth between the police and the council, each claiming it was the other's issue related to our safety.

The digital world has become an integral part of our daily lives, yet it remains a space where anonymity often shields the perpetrators of harmful behavior. Trolling, which involves deliberately provoking and upsetting people online, not only threatens the mental health of individuals—especially public figures, influencers, and creators—but also their safety and well-being.

Laws must evolve to reflect the digital age's challenges. By criminalizing internet trolling, we can ensure that those who hide behind screens to bully or harass others face real-world consequences. Currently, the lack of defined laws and proper enforcement allows trolls to continue their harmful actions with impunity, leaving victims in fear and distress.

Social media platforms have made numerous strides in connecting the world, but they also have the responsibility to protect their users, especially those who add substantial value to their platforms. These platforms have the technology to identify and ban users who use their accounts to harm others and should implement stringent regulations to do so.

Furthermore, proper policing of internet activity is essential. Authorities must be equipped and willing to handle cases of online harassment seriously, ensuring swift action is taken to protect victims and deter future occurrences. Jurisdiction issues between councils, the police, and social platforms need to be clarified so victims get the help they need without being caught in bureaucratic limbo.

Sign this petition to urge lawmakers to criminalize internet trolling, enforce regulations effectively, and ensure social media sites step up to protect their users, creating a safer online environment for everyone. Let's transform the internet from a place of fear to a space where creativity and connection flourish without intimidation.
