The issue
I created this petition because coercive control can have devastating impacts on individuals, children, and families long before physical violence occurs. Coercive control is an insidious form of domestic abuse that often goes unrecognised and unreported, leaving victim-survivors feeling trapped, isolated, and misunderstood. In Western Australia, where current legal frameworks do not adequately address these patterns of emotional and psychological abuse, it is crucial that we act now to extend more effective protections.
Coercive control is characterized by a range of controlling behaviors that can include intimidation, humiliation, monitoring activities, isolating from friends and family, and restricting autonomy. It chips away at the victim's sense of self and restricts their freedom. Research has shown that around 95% of domestic violence cases include a factor of coercive control and it's often a precursor to escalating violence.
Currently, Western Australia lacks specific legislation that defines and prosecutes coercive control as a criminal offense. Other states like New South Wales have already set a precedent by introducing laws that criminalise such behaviours, providing both a deterrent for perpetrators and a pathway for justice for those affected.
Incorporating coercive control into family violence legislation will not only raise awareness about its severe impact but also encourage victims to come forward knowing there are protections in place. This step is necessary to acknowledge victim-survivors' experiences fully and reflect the serious nature of this abuse in our legal system.
We call upon the Western Australian Government to urgently criminalise coercive control and fortify protections for victims and families. By doing so, we will move towards a safer and more just society. Please sign this petition to lend your voice to this urgent cause and help implement crucial change in our community.
