Criminal Justice Reform in South Dakota:

The Issue

In South Dakota, I work tirelessly to ensure that law enforcement operates strictly within the Constitution, safeguarding the rights and dignity of all individuals. As someone who battles for accountability when county prosecutors fail to honor their oath to serve the public and uphold the A.B.A. Code of Conduct, I find myself standing as both a survivor of domestic violence and a victim of systemic failings and public corruption.

Despite reaching out to the Attorney General's Office, my cries were dismissed. My pleas to the Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division were met with silence. My outreach to the Governor just referred me back to the Attorney General, completely dismissing any hope for help. Those who are entrusted to protect our most fundamental liberties, turned a blind eye to me. Rejection by the very system that promises protection left me voiceless and disillusioned.

This is not just my story; it is the story of countless others in South Dakota who face similar indifference and impunity from those entrusted with power. We must unite to demand transparency and accountability within our criminal justice system. Accountability is not a threat to authority; it is its foundation.

We need trauma-informed care, not solitary confinement. We need healing programs, not cages. We need to remember that the justice system is not about vengeance—it is about the protection and restoration of community.

If we want safety, we must invest in humanity. That starts with acknowledging the humanity of those who have been deemed disposable by the system.

Our aim is to implement necessary reforms that will ensure fairness and justice for all. We advocate for the establishment of independent oversight committees to review prosecutorial misconduct, inmate health, prison policies, and law enforcement practices. We call for ongoing training programs on civil rights and ethical standards with protections for civilians who report misconduct, which will foster an environment of integrity, accountability and respect. We want to bring systems of rehabilitation, restoration, and hope to South Dakota.

Sign this petition to hold our state's criminal justice system accountable and push for substantive reforms that reflect the values and rights enshrined in our Constitution. Together, let's bring change to South Dakota’s justice system and ensure that it truly serves and protects all of its citizens.
