The Issue

On July 13,2025, my son, a beautiful soul with level two autism, drowned in an above-ground pool. The lack of adequate safety measures and constant supervision turned what should have been a safe environment into a scene of heartbreak. He was left unsupervised, and in a heart-wrenching matter of minutes, our lives changed forever. He remained in the water for over five minutes, a haunting time frame that no parent should ever endure. This can happen to any family, and it is imperative we act now to prevent similar tragedies.

Drowning is one of the leading causes of unintentional injury-related deaths among children aged 1-14. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about one in five people who die from drowning are children aged 14 and younger. For every child who dies from drowning, another five receive emergency department care for nonfatal submersion injuries, which can cause severe brain damage and long-term disabilities.

Preventable drowning accidents, especially in residential pools, should be treated with utmost seriousness and responsibility. We propose implementing strict safety regulations and holding responsible parties accountable for failing to uphold these standards. This includes mandatory fencing and self-latching gates, pool alarms, and stringent penalties for those who neglect these safety obligations.

By implementing policies that require immediate disciplinary measures for pool owners who do not follow safety regulations, we can save lives. We can also educate the public about the dangers and ensure that this issue receives the attention it deserves. It’s not just about accountability, but about creating environments where our children are protected from avoidable harm.

Join us in urging our lawmakers to redefine legislation that considers negligence leading to drowning as a crime. Let’s protect our children and prevent unnecessary heartbreak in other families. Please, for the sake of our children’s safety, sign this petition to bring about the change that can save lives.
