The Issue

As a UC Merced student and campus leader, I face long nights filled with studying, working on various organizations, and trying to make ends meet. I often find myself searching for a place where I can not only continue my work in peace but also grab a warm meal to fuel the long hours. Unfortunately, Merced has no safe, quiet, and private spaces dedicated to students who need to work and eat after hours.

The lack of such spaces is a pressing issue for the countless students like me who need to balance between academics, extracurricular activities, and jobs. Eating well and having a comfortable space to study are essential for our success and well-being. Many of us end up sacrificing meals or working in inconvenient settings that do not support productivity or health.

Creating late-night, study-friendly food spaces in Merced would not only support students' academic performance but also their mental health. It would offer a sanctuary for those who burn the midnight oil, providing them with nutritious food options and an environment conducive to focused study sessions.

Studies have shown that students who have access to healthy food and appropriate study environments are more likely to succeed academically and maintain a good balance in life. Universities around the world have recognized the need for such spaces and have already implemented them to great success. Implementing a solution in Merced requires collaboration between the city, local business owners, and the university to establish a venue that stays open late, caters to students, and offers a coffeehouse-style setting with nutritious snacks and meals available.

By having designated late-night food venues, we can foster a more supportive and vibrant student community in Merced. We urge local authorities, business owners, and the University of California, Merced to acknowledge this need and take proactive steps towards creating such spaces.

Join us in calling for the establishment of safe, quiet, and welcoming late-night food spaces where students can study, eat, and thrive. Sign the petition to make Merced a true student-friendly city.
