🐾 Petition for Universal Veterinary Healthcare in Canada

Goal: 25,000 Signatures

Our Furry Family Deserve Care Too

In Canada alone, there are an estimated 28 million pets — loyal companions, protectors, emotional supports, and cherished family members. Yet when they fall ill or get injured, the cost of care can be overwhelming.

The average annual expense for a pet ranges between $2,000 and $4,000. That means Canadians collectively spend between $56 billion and $112 billion every year on veterinary services.

While Canadians are fortunate to benefit from universal healthcare, our four-legged family members are left without a comparable safety net.

Why This Matters:

Pets are not luxuries — they are family.

They provide:

• Emotional support and mental health benefits

• Companionship for seniors and individuals living alone

• Therapeutic support for children and those with disabilities

• Service and working roles in communities

When veterinary costs become unaffordable:

• Families are forced to delay treatment

• Preventable illnesses worsen

• Pets are surrendered to shelters

• Euthanasia becomes a financial decision rather than a medical one

No Canadian should have to choose between paying rent and saving their pet’s life.

What We Are Asking For:

We call upon the Government of Canada to:

• Explore the creation of a National Veterinary Healthcare Program

• Provide subsidized essential medical coverage for pets

• Offer income-based veterinary assistance

• Implement preventative care initiatives to reduce long-term costs

• Recognize pets as integral members of Canadian families in healthcare policy discussions

This is not about replacing private veterinary clinics — it’s about creating a support system so emergency and essential care is accessible to all.

The Economic Reality:

• Canadians are already spending billions annually on veterinary services. A structured, preventative, and subsidized system could:

• Reduce emergency care costs

• Support responsible pet ownership

• Decrease shelter overcrowding

• Strengthen community wellbeing

It is long overdue that our furry companions receive healthcare support that reflects their importance in our lives.
