Creating Strong NISD Communicators through fair compensation for SLPs

Creating Strong NISD Communicators through fair compensation for SLPs
The Issue
At Northside ISD, Dr. John Craft's current mission is to transform the learning experience for approximately 97,597 students. Through speech therapy IEP services, more than 180 Speech-Language Pathologists contribute to the building of more than 8% of NISD learner profiles, which includes creating leaders, collaborators, communicators, critical thinkers and solution finders, all of which are expressive, receptive, pragmatic language, voice and articulation based skills that SLPs strengthen for more than 8,000 students with disabilities across the district.
Speech-Language pathologists both evaluate and provide IEP services for students with autism, intellectual disability, learning disability, and other complex communication disorders. In partnering with Dr. Craft and his belief that every student deserves quality education which honors their voice, fair compensation should be provided so that all students with disabilities can be included in Dr. Craft's mission.
The average Speech-Language Pathologist salary in Texas is approximately $80,076 per year. The average salary for Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) in the Northside Independent School District (NISD) in San Antonio, TX is $63,445. While school holidays are calculated into school SLP salaries across Texas, qualitative studies have shown that school-based Speech-Language Pathologists are consistently overwhelmed, with higher caseloads than average, and the hourly rate of work for SLPs during the school year matches or exceeds 12 months of work when treatment, evaluation and paperwork duties are compared with other work settings. In order to ethically continue providing valuable services for students that support NISD's mission, vision and beliefs, speech-language pathologists should be compensated in an increase of pay to at least $80,000.
