The Issue

Every new mother embarks on a journey filled with joy, anticipation, and the overwhelming responsibility of nurturing a new life. Yet, amidst these beautiful moments, many mothers battle with significant physical, emotional, and psychological challenges. I have seen it first-hand: mothers crying for help, feeling lost and unrecognized, while trying to adjust to their new roles. This often starts from the day their baby arrives and can extend for years.

Current postpartum care is woefully inadequate, ending too soon after childbirth, often just at the point when mothers need it the most. According to the American Psychological Association, up to 1 in 7 women experience postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety or postpartum psychosis, serious conditions that requires comprehensive care and attention. Despite this, many mothers are not equipped with the necessary resources to feel heard, supported, and empowered. Their need for counseling, continuous support, and acknowledgment of their mental health struggles is often neglected.

Our healthcare systems must extend the scope of postpartum care beyond the initial weeks following childbirth. We call upon the health authorities to implement comprehensive postpartum support packages that include long-term counseling services, peer support groups, and regular check-ins with healthcare providers over multiple years, not just weeks. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention illustrates that sustained health interventions significantly improve the wellbeing of mothers, ultimately benefiting their families and communities.

We can no longer overlook the cries of our mothers. By addressing this critical issue, we are nurturing not just the health of mothers, but the future of our families and society as a whole. We urge the government, healthcare providers, and community organizations to recognize motherhood's challenges and to provide these necessary resources to every mother, everywhere.

Sign this petition to demand comprehensive postpartum support for all mothers—to ensure they are not just surviving, but thriving.
