Create Social Media Safeguards for Mental Health and Health Coaches/Influencers/Educators
The Issue
As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with twenty years of experience, I have witnessed firsthand the impactful and positive change that genuine mental health services can bring. However, I'm increasingly alarmed by the incorrect and potentially harmful advice proliferating on social media networks. Influencers and individuals with no formal training in mental health, addiction recovery, hormone health, chronic illness management, trauma, and relationship counseling pose as experts online. Their advice, often founded solely on personal experience rather than legitimate expertise, risks misleading vulnerable individuals. Research is either misinterpreted or falsely cited. There is no licensing board to ethically hold people accountable who identify as non licensed professionals.
It is no secret that platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook have become breeding grounds for this kind of misinformation. At best, it leads to confusion and frustration for people seeking real help. At worst, it can cause serious harm to someone's mental and physical health. The dilution of professional, evidence-based advice by unqualified sources undermines the services provided by licensed experts who have undergone years of education, rigorous supervision, and regular continuing education.
In this digital age, it is crucial that social media companies step up and ensure the integrity of the information shared on their platforms. This is not only necessary but a moral obligation to the public that trusts these platforms. We need major social networking sites to implement stringent verification processes to distinguish qualified professionals from unlicensed individuals. This includes requiring credentials verification and flagging content that extends beyond an individual's professional scope.
Social media accountability can be achieved through policies mandating that users claiming expertise in areas such as mental health and health must present verifiable credentials from recognized bodies. Furthermore, social media networks could create partnerships with credentialing organizations to validate such information. This is more about safeguards than infringing on people's rights or freedom of speech.
By signing this petition, you are supporting the call to action for a more regulated and safe digital space where mental health advice is responsibly shared by those qualified to do so. Let us protect the integrity of mental health information and ensure safety for all users seeking help online. Please join me in pushing for credible and informed social media practices by signing this petition today.
