The Issue

Traveling as a neurodivergent individual presents unique challenges that can make flying particularly overwhelming and stressful. In my experience, the current state of airplane seating and environment can severely affect our ability to rest, pass time, and feel comfortable during a flight. Many neurodivergent passengers, like myself, find it incredibly difficult to sleep due to the overwhelming noise, harsh lighting and lack of suitable accommodations.

Flights without in-flight entertainment drag interminably for individuals who are sensitive to stimuli, intensifying feelings of discomfort and anxiety. The rule prohibiting passengers from holding their backpacks, even when they are not blocking the aisle, overlooks the comfort it may provide to neurodivergent individuals who rely on having personal belongings at hand to self-soothe and manage sensory input.

Another significant issue is the discomfort caused by the seatbelt buckle, which protrudes into the passenger's arm space, causing constant sensory irritation for some individuals. It's also worth noting that aircraft vacuum toilet flushes are extremely loud and can be distressing or painful for sensory-sensitive passengers; quieter or insulated designs should be considered in accessible cabins.

To alleviate these problems for countless neurodivergent travelers, airlines must innovate by creating sensory-friendly suites priced the same as economy seating. These suites should include sound-dampening features, adjustable light levels, comfortable seating arrangements (including a less intrusive restraint), and a revised set of rules allowing the holding of personal belongings. Equipping staff with the necessary training to handle situations involving neurodivergent passengers with empathy and understanding is another critical step. While sensory-friendly spaces are provided at airports for before and after flights, it doesn't fix the flight itself, as priority boarding isn't enough for everyone, and staff support isn't always guaranteed depending on the airline, which would be required in the event of a meltdown.

Unfortunately, the alternative of flying privately to avoid these problems is not financially feasible for most. Therefore, it is paramount for commercial airlines to step up in creating equitable and inclusive flying experiences for all passengers.

77% of parents with neurodivergent, particularly autistic, children choose not to fly because of these problems. I, an autistic teenager from England, have experienced a great deal of discomfort and missed out on holidays because of my issues. However, in a world where speed is prioritised, flying is essentially unavoidable.

Sign this petition to urge airlines to provide neurodivergent-friendly accommodations on their flights and make air travel a more inclusive and accessible experience for everyone.
