Our daughter, Lundyn Treese, was tragically taken from us by a drunk driver who was three times over the legal limit. This was not just an accident; it was an avoidable tragedy that robbed Lundyn of her future and left our family shattered. Despite the severity of this crime, we have found that the justice system in Pennsylvania—and indeed in many other states—fails to adequately hold drunk drivers accountable for their actions.

Drunk driving fatalities are a persistent issue across the United States. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly 30 people die every day in the U.S. as a result of drunk-driving crashes. This equates to one person every 50 minutes. However, the consequences faced by offenders do not reflect the gravity of these losses. Current Pennsylvania DUI laws, and those in numerous other states, often result in light sentences that do not deter habitual offenders.

We are proposing "Lundyn's Law" as a powerful step forward. Under this legislation, any individual convicted of causing a fatality while driving under the influence would face a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years in state or federal prison. This law aims to serve as a deterrent, encouraging individuals to think twice before making the reckless decision to drive under the influence.

Implementing Lundyn’s Law would not only honor our daughter's memory, but also help prevent other families from enduring the pain we have suffered. It is essential that our laws convey the seriousness of driving under the influence and ensure justice for its victims.
