Create independent oversight for home insurance claims in Canada

Create independent oversight for home insurance claims in Canada
The Issue
In 2021, I filed an insurance claim with Intact Insurance following damage to my home. What followed was a prolonged and distressing experience: delayed responses, pressure to accept payouts far below what was required for proper restoration, and a series of failures that raised serious concerns for my safety.
Work carried out by an insurer-assigned contractor, On Side Restoration, did not meet statutory safety requirements, resulting in my exposure to asbestos contamination. I have since been diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, which has significantly impacted my health.
This matter has entered civil litigation, yet no resolution has been reached. As a result, my financial stability has been severely strained, and I am now at risk of losing. Had to sign POA to sell it. Once sold I have no home, and will be living in my car.
This is not an isolated case. Across Canada, homeowners face similar challenges—delays, underpayment, unsafe restoration practices, and limited accountability. These systemic issues erode trust, place individuals at risk, and leave many without meaningful recourse.
To protect Canadians, independent oversight of home insurance claims must be implemented. An impartial body should ensure transparency in claim handling, enforce safety compliance in restoration work, and hold insurers accountable to their contractual obligations.
Independent oversight would help prevent unsafe conditions, ensure fair and timely settlements, and restore trust between insurers and policyholders.
We call for legislative and regulatory action to mandate independent oversight across the home insurance industry.
