Create inclusive gender-neutral restrooms in all schools
The Issue
Growing up as a transgender individual, I and many others like me, have faced the universal struggle of not feeling safe or secure in traditional "boy" and "girl" restrooms. What should be a simple visit to the bathroom often becomes a source of anxiety and fear, and for transgender and non-binary students worldwide, this experience is all too common. School should be a place where every student feels comfortable and included, but the current system of gendered restrooms inherently excludes a significant portion of the student body.
Transgender and non-binary individuals are part of the rich tapestry that makes up our student communities. Yet many of them have to endure daily harassment and discomfort simply because there isn’t a restroom that aligns with their gender identity or offers the privacy they need. According to a 2020 study by GLSEN, more than 75% of transgender students feel unsafe at school. This lack of a safe restroom contributes to missed class time as students avoid using facilities altogether, ultimately impacting their education and well-being.
Implementing gender-neutral restrooms in schools worldwide would represent a significant step towards inclusivity, safety, and acceptance. Gender-neutral restrooms offer a private, safe space for transgender, non-binary, and all other students who don't conform to traditional gender norms. They reduce bullying, increase participation in school activities, and promote a culture of acceptance and understanding.
We have countless models around the world where gender-neutral restrooms have been successfully implemented, leading to increased student safety and well-being. Schools that adopt this change report not only happier students but also safer school environments.
