Create Debate Team at East Brunswick High School

Create Debate Team at East Brunswick High School
The Issue
Who is impacted?
East Brunswick Public Schools students are missing out on a vital academic and extracurricular opportunity: competitive debate. While the district already offers valuable programs like IPLE, Mock Trial, and Model United Nations, none of them provide the same platform for sharpening public speaking, critical thinking, and rapid argumentation as formal debate. Students passionate about logic, policy, and persuasive discourse have no outlet to pursue this interest, leaving them at a disadvantage compared to peers in other high-achieving districts. This gap not only limits their growth but also reduces their competitiveness for top universities that value debate experience.
What is at stake?
If the school does not implement a debate team, students will continue to miss opportunities to participate in nationally recognized competitions such as NSDA Nationals, Harvard Debates, or the TOC—platforms even more prestigious and academically rigorous than MUN or Model Congress. These experiences offer scholarships, national recognition, and advanced college readiness skills. Without debate, East Brunswick risks falling behind comparable districts that are already benefiting from the academic rigor, leadership development, and college opportunities these events provide.
Why is now the time to act?
Launching a debate team requires minimal to no funding, especially with motivated students and willing faculty advisors. Interest is already high, and the infrastructure—such as classroom space, local circuits, and digital resources—already exists. By acting now, East Brunswick can capitalize on this momentum and begin preparing a team to compete in the upcoming academic year. Waiting any longer would mean yet another class of students graduates without the opportunity to find their voice in one of the most valuable academic arenas available.
