Create Chloe's Law to save the lives of preterm babies

Create Chloe's Law to save the lives of preterm babies
The Issue
This fight was born out a of tragedy which lost me my beautiful preterm baby Chloe. Which was very much avoidable by the NHS and Chloe should be celebrating her 13th birthday in April. She was born at 25 weeks 1 day gestation. She fought hard, doubled her birth weight, came off the ventilator and onto the high flow machine. Chloe had a big personality and knew what she wanted.
But sadly like so many other babies, on the 4th of June 2011 our worst nightmare came true and Chloe at 6 weeks old died in agony from sepsis. She had got (Necrotising Enterocolitis) NEC, because it went undiagnosed and untreated even though she had every symptom on the NHS website for NEC. It developed into sepsis and she lost her fight in unimaginable pain which was only made worse by the staff.
Last memory I have of Chloe is her screaming in pain as I was pushed out the room where they force fed her till she had a massive vomit and it haunts me everytime I hear a baby cry to this day.
It's taken years uncover the truth and learn what our daughter went through. The hospital lied and said she died from ecoli that was passed by the caregiver I.e me. No family should go through this and with it affecting so many of preterm babies this needs changing now.
With more and more babies born early, that number is only going get worse. Chloe died in hospital of a condition that is cured with antibiotics. It should never have happened. Chloe could have been saved.
As it stands the treatment available is guidance only not the law. There is no awareness and not much prevention has been done. This condition develops from formula which we were not told at all about.
Chloes Law will raise awareness, improve prevention and have a treatment plan in place that all the NHS will have to follow by law meaning they cant do this again and if they do prosecution will happen. If this was already law I know Chloe would have not only survived but may not have even had it in the first place. It will save countless families the heartache we live with everyday.
It will raise awareness by having posters in all neonatal wards explaining the risks with formula and the protection given against this condition with breastmilk and the symptoms to look out for. If a baby is given formula, parents must sign to say they have been made aware of the risks.
It will improve prevention by offering parents the alternative of donor milk if unable to express milk themselves. Babies who are born under 32 weeks, have a medical condition or was unwell before birth will have regular testing and monitored for NEC. Parents at anytime can request a second opinion by healthcare professional of their choice. All babies in neonatal will get a diary will all information on common conditions inc symptoms. Along with enough space for parents to write daily concerns that staff will have to act on and sign daily.
Chloes law will provide a step by step treatment plan that will save countless lifes. Any baby that shows any of the signs associated with NEC will have testing done straight away, antibiotics started, feeds stopped and a nutrition line started until their test results come back.
If tests results are positive then all of the above treatment continued and oxygen increased. Strict hygiene must be followed to avoid further infections. Families are listened to and supported (which we werent).
If surgery is required then families are to be allowed a visit through glass window incase the worst happens (which my sister wasnt allowed until sadly Chloe had passed).
After surgery painkillers must be given, all the above treatment continued and a blood transfusion may be required.
This condition attacks the bowl and starts to kill it, but is cured with antibiotics. If left untreated though, it will develop into sepsis in 3 days resulting in a horrific death.
We ask for everyone to pull together and sign this petition and get Chloes Law 2024 in place accross the whole of the NHS.
Thank you for reading and taking the time in doing this. I cant save Chloe but together we can save others.
With 11,000 avoidable deaths a year has to stop and we start by signing and sharing this.
