The Issue

Every day, I walk through Manning Park with my beloved dog, Maggie, and I can't help but feel a pang of guilt every time she eagerly nudges her leash, yearning to run freely and socialize. Like many others in Montecito, I cherish the peacefulness of our parks, but I also recognize the pressing need for a dedicated space where our dogs can play off-leash without disturbing those who prefer a quieter environment.

Currently, Santa Barbara County has clear regulations prohibiting dogs from being off-leash in public parks. While these rules are essential for preserving order and safety, they also inadvertently stifle the natural joy and sociability of our canine companions. This often leads to residents ignoring leash laws, not out of defiance, but from a desire to let their pets experience the social and physical enrichment they truly need.

A well-designed enclosed dog park within Manning Park would provide the perfect solution. It would not only ensure safety and enjoyment for both dogs and people but also foster a greater sense of community among pet owners. Montecito, with its strong sense of community and shared spaces, deserves a place where dogs can safely play. Numerous studies have highlighted the benefits of dog parks, ranging from the improvement of dogs' social skills and behavioral wellness to the reduction of stress in their owners.

Moreover, creating an enclosed area for dogs isn't just beneficial for pet owners. It helps in curtailing potential conflicts between dogs and people who are seeking solace in the park or are perhaps not fond of dogs. The designated space would alleviate such concerns, making Manning Park a more pleasant experience for everyone.

We are calling upon Santa Barbara County officials to consider this proposal seriously. Montecito's canines, like Maggie, deserve a space to run and socialize freely and safely. Let's come together as a community to make this happen.

Please sign this petition to show your support for an enclosed dog park at Manning Park. Together, we can make our community even more harmonious for all its members, two-legged and four-legged alike.
