Create a statue of Sir Tim Shadbolt in Invercargill
The Issue
Growing up in Invercargill, Sir Tim Shadbolt was more than just a mayor to us; he was a fixture of our community, a beacon of leadership and tenacity. His passing on Thursday, 8th of January, 2026, at the age of 78, has left a void in our hearts and in the heartland of Southland itself. Sir Tim's dynamic and engaging persona brought a breath of fresh air and a wave of transformation to Invercargill during his eight terms as mayor between 1993 and 1995, and then from 1998 to 2022. As a Kiwi and an Invercargill native, I urge you to join me in celebrating and immortalizing his remarkable legacy by installing a bronze statue in his honour.
Sir Tim was more than a steady hand at the helm; he embodied resilience and a flair for overcoming adversity. His service as Waitematā (Auckland) Mayor from 1983 to 1989, coupled with his extensive tenure in Invercargill, makes him one of New Zealand's longest-serving mayors. In 2019, this dedicated stewardship was recognized nationally when he was awarded the Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the New Year's Honours List. This petition is not just for current generations but also for those to come, as it’s crucial we continue to share Sir Tim’s story and impact.
Introducing a statue in Invercargill would serve as a poignant and visible testament to Sir Tim's dedication and love for this city. It will be a rally point for community spirit, serving as both a reminder and an inspiration of what steadfast resolve, coupled with a passion for community, can achieve. Such an installation will also attract visitors, extend cultural understanding, and celebrate the life of one of New Zealand's notable public figures.
Invercargill's history is rich, and by honouring Sir Tim Shadbolt in this manner, we ensure that his contributions are never forgotten and always cherished. He wasn't just a politician, he was a force of nature who left a lasting imprint on our cultural and civic landscape.
Discussions among the local council in 2023 considered the possibility of a statue dedicated to Tim Shadbolt. As a legacy statement, it would now be appropriate for this proposal to be formally actioned.
Join me and many others from our town and across New Zealand in urging our local government to take action and commemorate the life and legacy of Sir Tim Shadbolt. Let's ensure his influence and spirit endure in Invercargill and beyond. Please sign this petition and help us in making this tribute a reality for future generations to appreciate and admire.
