Create a register for repeat domestic abusers

The Issue

I have experienced firsthand the hidden and often tormented lives that victims of domestic abuse are forced to endure. But what makes it even more frustrating and frightening is discovering that my abuser had a history of abusing multiple women before me. I was only made aware of this after it came to light on social media, specifically Facebook. This pattern of abuse should be public information, and victims should not have to rely on the chance discovery of it through unofficial means.

It is alarming to think about how many women, just like me, have faced similar situations, walking into a relationship unaware that their partner has a history of violence against former partners. Research by SafeLives indicates that it can take up to 35 incidents of domestic abuse before a victim calls the police. This is not just a failure of the legal system, but a failure to protect vulnerable individuals from harm. A central registry of repeat domestic abusers could help in preventing such distressing cycles of abuse.

A public register would not only raise awareness but also act as a deterrent for those who repeatedly harm others. This is more than just about accountability— it is a fight for transparency and safety in our communities. Countries like the United Kingdom have implemented similar registries, known as Clare’s Law, allowing individuals to inquire about the abusive history of their partners. It has proven to be an effective tool in safeguarding potential victims.

I urge you to consider the desperate need for a domestic abuser registry. Such a registry would provide verified access to necessary information, empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their relationships and enhancing community safety as a whole.

Please sign this petition to demand the creation of a transparent and accessible registry for repeat domestic abusers. It's time we took definitive steps to combat this pervasive issue and protect future victims from falling into the same cycle of abuse. Together, we can push for change and ensure that no one has to endure what we have gone through.
