The Issue

I wanted my child to know that she could make a difference, and I witnessed the power of the small child who sees the world with pure eyes. As I followed her lead, I worked with our local elementary teachers to gather and organize service projects into a framework. Despite wonderful outcomes, it became apparent that unless I became the go-to person for a single project, things would fall apart. It became clear that a national initiative was necessary to create the inspiration needed to sustain these outcomes.

We need to start a nationally connected service learning initiative that engages our children in meaningful ways from kindergarten through 6th grade. Our children are eager and capable of contributing to their communities if given the opportunity. This initiative could focus on specific topic areas for each grade level and provide a structured framework to ensure continuity and success. Food recovery is an ideal starting point, as evidenced by the success documented in the paper linked [here](https://k12serviceinitiative.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/food2share.pdf

This petition does not seek funding. It aims to harness the potential of children, leveraging their natural enthusiasm and curiosity to drive change and make a real impact in their communities. Implementing a national framework for service learning will provide the consistency needed to support our educators and empower our children to take the lead in creating a better future.

By integrating structured service learning into our elementary curriculum nationwide, we can cultivate a generation of thoughtful, engaged citizens who are equipped with the skills and mindset necessary to address the challenges they will face. Join me in calling for a nationwide initiative that empowers our children and transforms our communities.
