The Issue

America will soon celebrate its 250th birthday. One Founding Father continues to be excluded from the annals of history, and it is time we correct this egregious omission.

In the early 2000s, as a teacher driven by a quest to inspire my students, I stumbled upon the name Charles Thomson buried in a footnote. Little did I know that this discovery would unveil a rich tapestry of American history often overshadowed by more famous figures. Charles Thomson, an immigrant orphan who rose to become the long-serving Secretary of the Continental Congress, captivated me with his tenacity and character. In a time when many Founding Fathers owned slaves, Thomson stood apart as a staunch abolitionist and an advocate for the overlooked.

Charles Thomson's contributions to the foundation of the United States are profound yet frequently forgotten. He was instrumental in communicating the Declaration of Independence to the people and in maintaining meticulous records of the Continental Congress, ensuring that the fledgling government operated smoothly and efficiently. His role was pivotal during the Revolutionary War, and his influence can be seen in the shaping of the nation's early policies.

Despite his significant contributions, Washington DC, the heart of American democracy, lacks a memorial to honor Thomson's remarkable service. This oversight is a disservice not only to Thomson but to all who value the principles of justice and equality he championed.

I propose that we create a memorial in Washington DC, celebrating Charles Thomson and his immense contributions. This memorial would serve as a powerful reminder of the values upon which our nation was built and inspire future generations to pursue a path of equality and justice.

Join me in urging the government and decision-makers to recognize and honor Charles Thomson's legacy. By signing this petition, we can take a step toward acknowledging the unsung heroes of our history and ensuring that their stories are not forgotten.
